Infertility
In September 2009, I went off the pill. My husband and I wanted to start a family. But I never got my period. I saw 3 doctors who diagnosed me with running too much, PCOS, and an ovulatory disorder caused by over-exercising or PCOS. I also had endometriosis, but surgery fixed that in summer 2010.
In 2011, I decided to put my fertility first and I drastically cut back on my workouts. I went through 5 medicated cycles (clomid or anastrozole + hcg + progesterone) before I got pregnant.

The emotions I don't want to feel

Hi Jen! I randomly came across your blog, but I saw this title at the top and it interested me. After reading, it sounds a lot like the Female athlete triad. In fact, the same thing can happen in guys too, but a little differently. For me, due to my eating disorder which contributed to over exercise and very low body fat levels, my testosterone severely decreased and without some lifestyle changes I was going to have a lot of problems.
A huge component of this was cutting back on the unnecessary exercise, as well as fueling those workouts, pre, post, and feeding my body in general. The most important being to eat more dietary fat, as this has a HUGE role in hormone regulation. I don’t know what you diet is like, but saturated fats like those found in grass-fed meats and coconut oils are actually extremely good for you, contrary to popular belief. The saturated fats that are bad are the ones that are “Created”, like in a Pop Tart lol.
I know you probably know all this and eat well, but I just wanted to see if I could at all help and would love to talk with you further about it if you think I’m right or wrong!
Great blog by the way!

Hi Chuck. I do not have the female athlete triad. I eat 3000+ calories a day (on non-long long days!), have no signs of osteoporosis, and plenty of body fat.
I’ve seen three doctors and they agree that I have some kind of ovulatory dysfunction caused by either PCOS or hypothalamic amenorrhea.

Well I hope everything will be fine and you’ll be in my prayers! Whats the next race for you?

Just found you blog following a link on twitter. I had hypothalamic amenorrhea, but with help was able to get pregnant. IF and HA suck, but if you can overcome them, the reward is so great! Here’s to a happy and healthy 9 months!! Congrats again!

That’s wonderful! So great to hear about your happy ending

Hey Jen! I am a triathlete with amenorrhea. I am only 18 but I like to think about the future. I know I want to have children, but do you have any suggestions? Should I be worried now?

Definitely see your ob/gyn and discuss your issues with him/ her. Be very honest about your mileage, nutrition, etc. Getting stuff sorted out now can help things down the road. It’s never too early to start thinking about your fertility!
I went on the pill at 18, but had regular cycles before that. It wasn’t until I came off the pill at 27 that I learned I didn’t get my period.

Congrats on a happy ending and the new babe on the way! I saw your 4 mike race results with Caitlin over on HTP.
I also had to overcome HA to get pregnant with my daughter, I understand the frustration.

Hi Jen! Congratulations on the baby on the way. I put our own infertility story up on my blog a few years ago at http://trainingsmoker.blogspot.com/2008/11/where-do-babies-come-from.html, and just thought I would share. You’re never really alone even though it often feels like it. Great blog!

Hi Jen! My sister (who blogs at healthontherun.net) shared your blog with me. I was diagnosed with PCOS last year and my husband and I are thinking about trying to start a family soon. I’m, of course, nervous about how my PCOS is going to affect my fertility but I am inspired reading your blog and seeing your journey to getting pregnant! Congrats!

Hi Jen! This is Jen! I was linked to your blog by Shayla @ The Good Life. I’ve also be diagnosed with PCOS and haven’t had a period since going off the pill in January. I’m in the middle of my first round of Clomid, but I don’t think it worked as all signs point to no ovulation. I’m going to be pouring over your blog over the weekend to catch up on your story and happy ending! I need to read things like this to keep my spirit up. Currently I’m just working with my OB/GYN, but the more I read, the more I think it might be a good idea to see the RE too! Thanks again for blogging your journey. I’m not brave enough to blog to the world about it yet! hehe
