5k training update (what's beautiful)
I'm so glad I'm training for a 5k as part of Under Amour's What's Beautiful challenge. Now that my long runs aren't quite so long, I find myself not dreading humid mornings or worrying about fueling nearly as much. I also love that my weekday runs don't take me as long now that I'm running faster. It's definitely a nice change of pace (pun intended).
The part of 5k training I like most, though, is the weight lifting component. I fell in love with strength training during Tina's Best Body Bootcamp this past spring. It was disappointing not being able to go all out with the weights due to the tolls of half marathon training.
But now that I've cut down on distance running, I have extra energy to burn. I've been lifting 3 times per week (including one plyometrics workout), and I feel like I can give it my all during every session. It's been fun and tough (in a good way!), and I'm hoping stronger muscles = a speedier 5k time.
Ah, yes, my time. I originally said I wasn't gunning for a certain time since I really have no clue what my goal should be. But you guys know me. I like time goals. The clock is my biggest competition. So, I've entered a practice 5k race on Memorial Day weekend so I can better determine my goal time for my "real" race in mid-June. I'm excited!
One thing that's really helping me stick with my training plan is the What's Beautiful competition. I love logging on to the site and seeing what incredible challenges the other ladies are tackling. It's so inspirational. Want to participate? All you have to do is sign up at http://whatsbeautiful.ua.com/.
Another thing that's making my training more enjoyable is some new apparel from Under Armour. I've tried a lot of products over the years and Under Armour's HeatGear has always kept me the most comfortable in the Carolina humidity.
The real star of the show, though, are the Charge RC Storm Running Shoes. I am so impressed with these guys. For the past 8 years, I've run every mile in my Brooks Adrenalines. I've honestly been reluctant to try minimalist shoes because, well, why fix what's not broken?
But, oh my goodness, I am so glad I tried these out. They are so light and literally add an extra bounce to my step. I've only run in them once so far, and I intended to only run/walk 1-2 miles at first to ease them in. Though once I got running, I really couldn't help myself. I ran an easy 5k and enjoyed every single step. I can't wait to lace up these shoes again!
