Snapping out of it

I've been in a huge funk the past couple of weeks. I just feel numb to everything. This is no surprise given that the baby was sick, a loved one passed away, and I'm dealing with an injury.

Still, even if my low mood is warranted, I'm just ready to snap out of it. So, I'm taking the following actions:

1. Unplugging. After being sick for a week, Wyatt is finally better. Since turning 5 months, he's been in a somewhat better mood. I cannot tell you how much joy this brings me. What doesn't make me happy is working all weekend and missing out on family time with Wyatt and Jeff (and Nati, too!). I'm making a huge effort to only do freelance work on the weekdays and completely unplug on the weekends.

2. Making travel plans. It's no secret that I hate living far away from my family and friends. I used to go up to NJ every month or so (thanks in part to a former job that was based up there), but since having Wyatt I've only been "home" once. After recent events, I feel it is even more urgent to spend as much time with my family as possible. This means I need to suck it up and take the cranky one on a plane a couple times this summer. Sorry fellow passengers.

3. Signing up for races. This may seem counterintuitive to do while you're injured. But since my knee issue isn't that bad, I figured signing up for a race that's so far off wouldn't be too foolish. Even if that race has me running 39.3 miles over the course of ~30 hours. No, not Goofy at all…

  1. Hope you feel better soon. We all have those funks, but they are no fun. I’m with you…trying to unplug a bit more on the weekends since I’m working so dang hard all week long. Hope you have a nice relaxing weekend. XOXO

  2. Goofy is cray-cray! Big ups to anyone who attempts it. I ran a half on New Years Eve and New Years Day. It honestly felt great, but then again, Goofy is an additional 13.1 on top of that. Good luck!*

  3. Hope your injury heals soon and come to NJ this summer!!! We can have baby playmates :). I am signing up for the Disney half next year and am so excited. I ran the Disney marathon in 2010 and heart Disney. Husband, Little guy and I can’t wait to go back next year and escape the NJ winter :).

  4. So sorry you’ve been in a funk… those come from time to time. Seeing family and making race plans are great ways to help pull you out! Way to go signing up for Disney! I’d like to do it someday, but am really intimidated by the back to back races.

  5. I was just at a playdate & one of the ladies recently flew to California with her baby. She was nervous the baby would be cranky – so she prepared little “favors” full of treats & cookies for her surrounding neighbors on the plane. I thought it was genius!

  6. Yay for taking proactive steps to make things better. Personally I am much happier when I have things to look forward to and races to train for.

I did Goofy in 2010 and loved it (even though it was 27 degrees and sleeting at the start of the half). I am so tempted to sign up for 2013, but I don’t know if that is overly ambitious. My little one will be around 5 months. I am also seriously considering doing the Wine & Dine half again this year but I am overwhelmed by the idea of making the trip with a 3 month old.

    • I did the 1/2 in 2010 in the sleet! So not fun. Good luck deciding; making postpartum race plans is nerve-wracking!

  7. Yay for signing up for Goofy. I was talking about running to a few of my non-running friends and they mentioned the goofy race in conversation. Totally crazy race though :-)

  8. Ah, that is such a cute picture of Wyatt :) I’m available for froyo or ice cream dates if that helps you snap out of it too!

  9. I’m dying to run Disney! Unfortunately, the timing just isn’t going to work out for it to happen this year, I’m super bummed!

  10. I think you will be fine with Wyatt on the plane. I had a work trip w/Rosalie when she was 4 months old and we had to fly from Greensboro to Vegas (4 flights). We were scared but she slept the whole time-there and back. It also does not cost anything to bring stroller-including car seat and base.

  11. I am flying from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta (i.e. not a LONG trip) with an 11 month old and a 2 tear old in three weeks…I think I might be crazy. BUT I really wanted to go to the beach and see family and this was the way to do it!

  12. I am in awe of you. you are absolutely amazing and I look to you as an inspiration. I am training to run my first half marathon and may never be up to the same caliber of runner that you are but thank you so much for keeping me motivated!! :)
