Best Body Bootcamp: Week 6

And I thought my Best Body Bootcamp week 5 attempt was pathetic. This week of bootcamp was even worse.

Between recovering from a half marathon and tapering for another half, I just didn't have it in me to lift more than once this week. As much as I missed my strength training sessions, running has always been my top priority.

We only have two weeks of bootcamp left! Sadness. I'd love to tell you that I plan to go all out starting today and act like a lifting rockstar for these last two weeks. But I'd be lying. I really have no plan for this week.

I am exhausted and so sore from my race on Saturday. It's literally been years since my body has felt this way after a race. Clearly, I need to focus on recovering right now. I'll do the bootcamp workouts as best as I can this week, but I know I need to listen to my body.

That being said, I am going to repeat the missed bootcamp sessions from the past few weeks eventually. Tina put so much time and effort into crafting these amazing workouts, and I really want to take advantage of them. More to come on my upcoming "training" plans soon!

My week in workouts:

  • M: 4mi recovery run at 8:44
  • Tu: 3.1 mi recovery run w/ stroller at 8:48, BBB workout A
  • W: OFF
  • Th: 4 mi run w/ stroller at 8:20
  • F: OFF
  • S: half marathon in 1:40:40
  • S: long walk w/ baby + furball

Other goals:

  • I walked Nati 6 of 7 days this week. Goal met!
  • I had more than one dessert 7 of 7 days this week. Goal not met! Starting today, I am done with sweets. I have zero self-control lately and I have no idea where this suddenly came from. I've always had a major sweet tooth, but never had a problem limiting myself to one treat per day. I feel bloated, my skin looks blotchy, and every night I feel disgusted by how much sugar I've inhaled throughout the day. Obviously, the one-sweet-per-day goal isn't working, so I need to be a little harsher with myself. I'm not having any dessert for a full week and seeing how it goes. I really, really hope I can do it!

  1. It’s really interesting to me that you are struggling with sugar intake… mostly because I’m right there with you! A couple of the blogs I read are written by breastfeeding mothers and several of them seem to be having this issue too! My little girl will be 20 weeks on Thursday and I have craved sugar from the second I started breastfeeding. I can’t seem to get myself under control! I’m still not sure what to do about it… but it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

  2. Ditto, ladies. I’m breastfeeding and am having a hard time with limiting my sugar intake as well! I’m going to start making smoothies and see if that might curb my appetite for desserts. Doubt it, but I’ll give it a whirl!

  4. I am a breastfeeding mom of a 5 month old. Although I have always had a sweet tooth, it became pretty much out of control during breastfeeding! I felt like I was living off of cookies just to have enough energy to make it through the day. A friend of mine who is a holistic nutritionist told me that sugar cravings are usually a result of a lack of protein in the diet and dehydration. Drinking more water and increasing my protein did make a difference in taming my sugar cravings. Congrats on your recent race results – very inspiring for a beginner runner like myself.

    • VERY interesting! I just started upping my protein intake and always feel dehydrated despite drinking literally gallons of h2o each day.

  5. Don’t feel too bad; I also had a terrible week 6. I only worked out once, and that was my 10k race! Also, I’ve had crazy sugar cravings lately. I’m wondering if it has something to do with breastfeeding? While every food sounds good pretty much all of the time, sugar has been my go-to food group!

  6. Have you consider a possible Candida overgrowth? I just had a baby 9 months ago and ever since having her I’ve had similar symptoms to what you are describing. Turns out, I failed my Candida overgrowth test. Now, I am on a strict anti-Candida diet. It’s not fun, but I am starting to feel better.

  7. Hey Jen Congrats on the race! Only in my dreams could I run a sub 2:00 half marathon! Also just wanted to say ditto to what Michelle said. Usually cravings especially sugar are a result of a lack of protein. I had the same constant obsession with sugar when I moved to China and basically lived vegetarian for six months. I ate chocolate and drank Coke like I would never see it again and I was always hungry. My dietetics proffessor said it was definately a protein deficency and probably an electrolite imbalance as salt is almost non existant in China. Try to find foods that have extra protein and sodium and see if that curbs the cravings for a while. Good luck!

  8. You know I’m huge on weight training…BUT it still is hard to fit in during race time and understandably so. I always cut down dramatically the week or so around my races too.
