Motherhood: Month 4

Posted by runnerstrials

Wyatt is 1/3 of a year old. How did that happen?

I feel like I have an “old” baby now. I keep catching myself saying things like “when Wyatt was a little baby…” Because, you know, 4 months is so old and he’s so big now.

Just how big? As of Monday, he was 15lbs 7oz and 25 inches long. The 60th percentile for both weight and height. His growth never ceases to shock me because he was only in the 5th percentile for weight when we left the hospital.

We’re still having some challenges. I wrote in our 3 month update that he was sleeping 5 or 6 hours at a time. Unfortunately, that’s gone downhill and we’ve only gotten a couple 5+ hour stretches since then. We got through the first 9 weeks of barely any sleep, so I know we’ll overcome this hurdle, too.

The moments when he’s in a good mood are so amazing. I love watching him discover the world.

His smiles, laughs, and coos are the cutest things ever. I get such a kick out of him! He likes to practice sitting and standing, and loves when he’s eye-level with or taller than mommy.

He’s become so fascinated by his hands. When they’re not in his mouth, he’s constantly staring at them.

He’s also trying to grab everything and chew on it.

Even when I’m burping him, he’s chomping on my shoulder. He’s also learned how to give himself hickies on his arm. Such a talented child.

I don’t want to jinx it, but I think his reflux is getting better. We had one rough day last week, but since then, he hasn’t vomited or pulled back in pain during feedings at all. He still spits up a lot, but that’s normal for babies his age. His doctor promised me that he’d grow out of reflux between 4 months and when we start solids, so hopefully that’s happening!

I’m doing well minus the whole lack of sleep thing. The biggest development this month is that my hair finally started falling out. This actually thrills me since I have a ton of hair. Maybe I can even start wearing it down again.

Running is going great. This is the first month I feel like I’m back to my old self training-wise, and it feels awesome! My speed is back and my endurance is slowly getting there. I can’t wait to race on Easter weekend!

As for my body, I’m a pound below my pre-pregnancy weight and a few pounds away from my happy weight. I still have a much wider, flabbier belly but I think it’s shrinking gradually. I don’t really fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes, but it’s hard to be annoyed by that when running is going so well.

Going forward

This will be my final monthly update and I’m going to limit blogging about Wyatt from now on. I had no problem opening up about my feelings regarding infertility because it just affected me. But now that I’m discussing my motherhood struggles, it also affects Wyatt.

I love my son more than anything, and I get frustrated because I don’t always know how to keep him happy or healthy, so I like reaching out for suggestions. I can see how my ramblings can be misinterpreted though, and the last thing I’d want is for Wyatt to be hurt by anything I shared. I’ll still talk about some mommy things (I owe you a post on breast-feeding and running), but I’m going to limit the specifics regarding my son. Thanks for understanding, friends!
