Running for two: keeping it comfortable
Hi all. I had my doctor appointment yesterday. My doctor thinks the sharp abdominal pain I started having on Sunday is bladder spasms or endometriosis coming back. I'm forgetting she said the dreaded "e" word, and just assuming it's bladder spasms! The good news is that nothing is wrong with baby
I also brought up my running. I felt the pain for a few seconds during yesterday's run and I'm noticing the 100% humidity is really getting to me. I asked her how much longer I can keep up my running routine.
She was really honest with me. She said some women are able to run up until their due dates, but she encourages her patients to stop when running gets uncomfortable. She said I'd know when this would happen and it would be about the time I'd feel like I need belly support. But she also said that some women need to run during pregnancy and understands if I need to push through moderate discomfort.
Everyone's running during pregnancy experience is different. Since I'm a paranoid mama-to-be and I have this bladder pain, I've decided to slowly start transitioning my runs to swims in the next few weeks. I will still run until it feels uncomfortable, but I think cutting back from 4 runs a week sooner rather than later is best for me.
In the meantime, I'm still a pregnant runner and I want to celebrate that
I signed up to run the Run for Your Cause 4 Miler next Saturday:
I ran this with a bunch of friends last year, and I'm hoping some will join me again this year. Hint hint
It will likely be my last race of pregnancy so my only goal is to have fun!
Staying comfortable during pregnancy runs is more than about knowing when to stop. It's also about feeling comfy in your clothes, shoes, etc.
The past few weeks my growing belly has been causing my running shirts to ride up. I'd keep pulling them down during my runs, and didn't really see it as a problem… until I tried an alternative.
For Two Fitness, a maternity workout clothes company, was kind enough to gift me this adorable running shirt! How cute is it?
This top stayed in place during a sweaty 5 miler the other day. It felt so much better to actually wear something that fit me! Shocker.
Better yet, I felt so confident in this shirt. I feel like my baby bump still is not noticeable, so proclaiming I was a pregnant runner made me feel super hardcore. My husband and I ran errands afterwards (before showering, I know, tisk tisk) and I got so many compliments. I loved it
For Two Fitness is currently having a sale. They have a ton of other cute clothes so check them out!

You look amazing!!!! Pregnancy suits you well & you look like you are really happy.
I am delighted for you.

Jen, I wore some long Lucy tops until I gave birth. They were awesome and never rode up. And, I wore the size small even over my huge belly. Best part is that they can still be worn now

Thanks Adrienne! I’ll check them out

That shirt is adorable!!

I just saw a pregnant friend with a shirt like that in a picture recently, I guess they get around
Love the shirt!

I give you lots of credit. I cannot even run unpregnant! Haha. Hope you have a great day, Jen!
July 8th, 2011 - 09:46
You look adorable! I love that your doctor is understanding of women who need to run while pregnant. I feel like some doctors wouldn’t get it!

Wow! Wish I’d known about this site about 9 months ago! I just toughed it out with my husband’s tshirts. You are looking fabulous
July 8th, 2011 - 11:03
That shirt is SO CUTE!!! I wish they had that 2 years ago! I would have been all over it! LOL! I’m sure I’ve mentioned the runningskirts.com maternity running tanks before, but I wish they had those 2 years ago, too.
Check out that prenatal cradle mini cradle, too. It can help you run longer with the belly (as long as you don’t have any other pain, of course!)
July 8th, 2011 - 11:08
Oh my gosh, that tanks is so cute!! I hope running becomes more comfortable for you, and if not, that swimming is a nice transition.
July 8th, 2011 - 14:36
That is the CUTEST shirt!! I love it on you, Jen! And it seems like your doctor is really open-minded but also looking out for your wellbeing, in all ways. I think she’s right, that you’ll know when and if it’s time to totally stop running, and cutting back for now and seeing how that goes seems like a great idea. I think you can’t go wrong with trusting your instincts and how you’re feeling.
July 8th, 2011 - 14:59
I love your shirt and I’m so glad you are doing whats best for you
July 8th, 2011 - 15:01
Love that shirt!! I’m not much of a swimmer, but I think it would be my workout of choice while pregnant. Dara Torres was such an inspiration. Plus feeling weightless for a bit while pregnant is probably a nice break.

I feel like you totally have a noticeable bump! I love the shirt – it’s so so cute!
July 8th, 2011 - 19:55
just bookmarked those cute shirts for when (if) i should ever need them. so adorable!!!
July 8th, 2011 - 21:51
Love the shirt and you look so pretty!!!!
July 8th, 2011 - 21:58
Yay for sticking with running! And you look adorable (and you have a TOTAL girl belly).
I confirm what your Dr told you (not that you need my confirmation!). I ran until I was 20 weeks pregnant and then had to switch to the elliptical/spinning. It wasn’t that I wanted to – the pain was just too great and my hips did NOT want to cooperate. I felt like jelly. As long as you are doing SOMETHING you are going to have a kickass pregnancy and birth
July 8th, 2011 - 21:59
PS – I don’t know why my name posts like that on your site – so weird!!
July 9th, 2011 - 10:25
So, I’m not pregnant but am considering buying that shirt for my next 1/2 so I don’t have to be embarrassed about going slow.
July 9th, 2011 - 12:27
Haha! There is nothing wrong with being slow! You’re still awesome
July 9th, 2011 - 18:07
Awww, thanks. I guess something is better than nothing. Although, that shirt may get you jumps in the porta potty (not that I’d do it…)

cute shirt! i actually tripped during my run today and fell (softly). Scariest fright ever. I had some tears and got really scared, but made myself keep going. Note to self: be even more careful than ever when running these days. I am a bit clumsy while pregnant. Now I just realized this might scare you. Shoot, sorry. I finished about 3 miles, fyi. my ankle hurts. I’ve never fallen running before! oh the joys of pregnancy. P.S. no babies were harmed in this episode. It was a very soft fall… happy week 17/18, baby buddy.

What a cute shirt! Although, I kind of chuckled to myself at your idea that your bump is not super noticable. Judging ONLY from the pictured posted here (which could be misleading since you have such a cute pregnancy running shirt), a person would have to be really oblivious to miss it if they look at you for more than 2 seconds.
It is one of the cutest little baby bumps I’ve seen!
I’m so glad you have such a supportive, honest, and open doctor to discuss your concerns with.
July 10th, 2011 - 18:40
Ok..you ARE hardcore! And I love that shirt! It almost makes me want to be pregnant just so I could wear one (almost).
July 10th, 2011 - 21:32
Ahhhhh what a CUTE clothing line!!!! I hope when I’m having babies (like, uhh… 10 years from now… gotta get married first!) I’ll be able to don cute workout clothes like that
July 11th, 2011 - 06:20
You look adorable! After yesterday’s issues, I am going in to been seen this morning. I’m not having any issues anymore, but I’m just more comfortable if I can get whatever it is checked out. BUT, like you, I am planning to let up on my running a bit. Only run 3 to 4 days per week . . . with the longest of those runs being a 10K — max. Probably I’ll stick more with 3 to 4-milers . . . and with SWIMMING/walking/etc. It’s a hard decision to make, but I feel pretty good about letting go a bit. <3 Glad to see you're doing well.

I had to start adding walking breaks in toward the end of my first trimester. It just got too hard to run for longer than 10 minutes at a time. I have found treadmill running now to be much, much easier! It keeps your stride length decent while still going at a slower, more manageable pace. I am also no longer running for distance, only time – 30 to 45 minutes at the most, 5 days a week. (It now takes me 45 minutes to run 4 miles, so I think that’s pretty good.) I do feel some discomfort every once in awhile, but most days I feel fine. Wait til you start feeling baby kicks… then you’ll start worrying with every run. Although I still feel comfortable running – more now than I did at the beginning of the 2nd tri – I think it will be the worry that gets me to stop rather than being uncomfortable! Take it easy and do whatever feels comfortable to you! And make sure to HYDRATE!!!!!!

This is the cutest shirt ever, i totally plan on buying when i get pregnant, awesome

I would really be shocked if it was really the endometriosis coming back. Usually a pregnant body will send the endo into dormancy. Although, I’ve had some weird pains with this pregnancy that I didn’t have w/my daughter pre-endometriosis, so who really knows? On a lighter note, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that running for 2 top!!!
