26.2 plans change
Thanks so much for all the kind words on my 20 mile trail race. I really cannot believe I did it
This time tomorrow I'll be in a car that will take me to a plane that will take me to the Healthy Living Summit
Incredibly excited about this. It's been 9 days since my last blogger meet-up and I am going through withdrawal. Cannot wait to be surrounded by people who don't think I'm weird for carrying around packets of Justin's peanut butter in my purse or running 20 miles through the woods.
Last night I did something crazy:
I finally signed up for a marathon!
I'll be running the Spinx Run Fest Marathon in Greenville, SC on October 30! Anyone want to join me?
This is not the marathon I planned on doing. Remember how I planned to run the Atlantic City Marathon because it's flat and I wanted to qualify for Boston? (Check out this post). Plans changed for a few reasons:
- I don't want to be exhausted at the start. I love coming up to NJ. But every time I'm here, I'm pulled in different directions. To see family, friends, go into the office. It's fun but exhausting. Seriously, Tylenol pm hasn't even helped me sleep this week. And it's also a huge change in my routine which is not something I want to do the week before a marathon.
- To avoid the unexpected. Tackling a new race course is exciting... when it's not 26.2 miles. I don't like surprises. I want to know where the hills are, which way the wind is likely to blow, etc. I'm anal but you would be too if you were training for a big race for months and had a time goal, right? I've run the Spinx Run Fest Half for the past 2 years. It's a very hilly course, but it's scenic and I know it. I've been told the second half isn't that hilly which helps. I realize this may hurt my chance to BQ, but there will be more opportunities.
- I love my husband. Hubby wouldn't have been able to make it to a NJ race. I thought this was no big deal at first. But during my 20 mi trail race Sunday, I really wanted him by my side. He won't run the race with me (ha, like he could keep up
) but he'll be available in the final few miles if I need him (he's running the half).
Plans were made to be changed right? This also means I have 2 extra weeks to train . I'm not sure if I'm happy or upset about that. Check back in a few weeks.
Now excuse me while I go pack for Chicago
See you in Central Standard Time folks.
How do you pick races?

Of course plans can and should change!
I will be running the half in Greenville that day. My first half ever, after Myrtle Beach got snowed out earlier this year.
Have fun in Chicago!

Great! Its such a fun half. Looks like a bunch of people will be there so we will need to meet up

I think you made a good decision! Sounds like you really thought it through and did what was best for you. I might be up for doing the half if you want me there…

laughing at your “like he could keep up” comment.
My marathon is the next day!! Pretty sure you are NOT going to have any problems qualifying for Boston, speedy lady.

Sounds like you definitely made a good choice!
I’ve never traveled by plane for a race. I just get so exhausted from flying that I can’t imaging having to RUN afterwards – whether it’s 1 or 3 days later! So I’ve stuck to races that I can drive to so far, with Peachtree being the farthest at 8 hours away.
I usually pick races by deciding what kind of event I want to do next, then find the one that’s closest to home that I still have time to train for. Not a very scientific process for sure!

Woo Hoo for Spinx! I’m doing the half this year! I did it last year as well and really liked the course (not sure if it will be the same as this year). Hopefully we will get a chance to meet at the race
I’m planning on wearing a Halloween costume so I should be easy to spot, haha

Fun! We will have to plan to meet up! I had a costume planned for last year but then it rained so I didn’t wear it.

Sounds like a smart decision! Good for you. Having support is huge! For my first marathon- I needed my hubs and my brother and it will definitely help! Flat courses or hilly courses- you still gotta run 26.2 miles!! You will do great!! So since its Oct 30th, you will still be in shape the next week so come up to NY and run with me!!!!!
August 12th, 2010 - 16:07
I think you made the right decision. I couldn’t do it without my husband either at my side or in the sidelines!
August 12th, 2010 - 16:50
i won’t run it but i am SO going to be your cheerleader. that’s like home field for me.
August 12th, 2010 - 16:51
This definitely sounds like you made the best decision. It’s SOO much better when you don’t have to travel far for a marathon, especially when you’re looking to PR/BQ — which I think you will, hills and all!! Especially with the support of your husband.
Also, maybe the extra 2 weeks will turn out to be a blessing. Gives you more flexibility with your long run schedule. And I’m running a marathon the next day, so I’ll be with ya in spirit that weekend!
Have a great time in Chicago!!

Good for you!! We signed up for our first half marathon, not realizing the course was ALL hills… it’s going to be rough, but we’ll get it done.
