Posture #fail

Hi guys!

I finally found the official results to my first Olympic tri. They honestly weren't as bad as I thought they'd be:

  • Official time 3:30:50, 20 out of 27 female finishers.
  • Swim: 34:48 (2:19 per 100 m pace), 24/27 females.
  • Bike: 1:58:34 (14.2 mph), 25/27 females.
  • Run: 48:48 (7:52 min mi), 7/27 females.

I placed third in my age group... out of 3 women. But my run time was faster than my husband's by 22 seconds. HA. Isn't that all that really matters? ;)

Just like my sprint triathlon, it's obvious I need to work on the swim and the bike. At least I have one event down :)

After I finished the race, I declared that I was done swimming and biking, and I was devoting all of my exercise time to marathon training. But somehow I ended up in the pool yesterday, I made plans to bike tomorrow morning and I keep searching for triathlons to do this fall. What can I say? I guess I just see LOTS of room for improvement and am up for the challenge ;)

Moving on... as I was looking through pictures from my triathlon, I can across the WORST PICTURE OF ME EVER. This picture also reminded me that I was supposed to be working on my posture for the month of July. Remember when I posted the Straight Up Challenge on July 1? Yeah, I forgot about it too. Bad blogger.

So did I meet my posture goals?

  • Practice good workplace ergonomics: I bought a new desk- sucess! But, I've yet to purchase a new chair- fail. At least it's a step in the right direction.
  • Ab and back work: Fail. I haven't done a crunch since before my surgery in mid-June. I can really tell, too. I want to start weight training more regularly, but I honestly just don't enjoy it at all. I need some motivation.
  • Yoga: Success! Emily was kind enough to take me to to my first yoga class a few weeks ago. Then I invested in an unlimited pass for the month. I've been 5 times and have plans to go tonight. I'm kind of falling in love with yoga. And it helps that many of my friends do it, too. Yoga definitely has found a home in my workout rotation.
  • Behavioral reinforcements: Fail. Every time the little "SIT UP" reminder went off on my outlook calendar, I sat up for a minute and then forgot about it.

When I created these goals, I had no clue how I was going to measure them. Kelly suggested that I have someone randomly take a picture of me and we could judge from there.

So here is the WORST PICTURE OF ME EVER from Sunday's race...

Gah! See how slouched I am, and how I'm pushing my stomach and butt out? (You can also tell how excited I was to get in the water, right?) So, obviously my Straight Up Challenge was a huge #fail.

Sigh. I'm at a loss for what to do...

  1. You’re so funny! In a bad posture competition, I bet I could beat you any day! Oh well, you kick butt at pretty much every other kind of challenge you take on! ;)

  2. Yay for a new desk! I don’t know what to tell u, I have awful posture too and my mom fusses at me all the time.

  3. I forgot to comment on your other post that I think the main reason I am apprehensive about tris is swimming in a lake/ocean…the ick! LOL

I’m usually pretty conscious of my posture. I try to think that good posture makes you look slimmer! LOL

  4. congrats on the oly tri! i’m considering doing one in september… this might have given me the encouragement i need :) as for the posture, i feel your pain. i have seen too many pictures of myself that are similar to yours. let’s hope we figure it out soon!

  5. Same here! I thought I focus on running for the rest of the year, but today I signed up for a sprint in two weeks… I guess tri season is not quite over yet! ;-)

    Have a great day!

  6. i am the WORST at sitting up straight. i get slouched down into an almost horizontal position. i’m not even sure how i manage to get myself into such a set up…

  7. Don’t give up on yourself yet! I think it’s something you have to focus on every day. Even little victories are something!!

And in regards to weight training…I don’t enjoy it at all. But I have made a commitment to myself that I’m going to do it 2x per week (for the most part) all summer. Even though I often have to give myself a pep talk before I go, the truth is that I really like what it does for me. I look at the actual physical changes to my body and how much stronger I feel and I get really excited. So even though I hate the process, I remind myself over and over of the benefits…and then drag my butt to the gym.

  8. I have terrible posture as well! That photo could EASILY have been of me….I stick my stomach and backside out too. Why do we do that?! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

  9. I just stumbled upon your blog and love it! I did my first Olympic Tri in May and I loved it but the swim almost gave me a panic attack! Our times are very similar but you are a much faster runner than me! :)

I have not done one since because I am a scaredy-cat of the swim. Ha!

Good luck and keep up your good blogging!
