Brick half marathon

So glad I Tuesday off and listened to my body. I woke up eager for my workout yesterday morning!

At sunrise, my hubby and I set out on my first brick.

We only had an hour so I set a goal for myself. I wanted to complete a brick half marathon in that time. That would be 13.1 miles:11 mi bike ride followed immediately by a 2.1 mi run.

The brick started off great! This was my best bike ride to date. I enjoyed myself so much I almost forgot to worry about the cars on the road.

The came time for the run. Ugh... my legs felt like jelly! They should seriously start calling these workouts jellies instead of bricks. I kept glancing down at my GPS and my pace was sloooooow, but I just could not move my legs any faster. After about a 1/2 mi though, my legs felt normal again! Yippee!

I know I'll have no problem running a 5k during my triathlon next weekend but I'd be really nervous about running a 10k or half marathon- in an Olympic or 1/2 ironman triathlon- after biking so long. But I have a feeling I'm up for the challenge ;)

We met our time goal without a problem:

  • 11 mi bike ride in 41 min (16 mph pace)
  • 2.1 mi run in 16:38 (7:55 pace)
  • 1 minute transition time
  • Total time for brick half marathon= 58:38 or about 50 min faster than I expect to run my real half marathon this Saturday!

And yesterday was National Running Day!

I remember I found out about National Running Day a day after it happened last year and I was SO disappointed because I took a spin class and didn't run :( In my book, that's the equivalent of not inhaling eating cookies on Christmas. Who would do such a thing?

But I made up for it this year. I met Brittney and Michelle for a 4 miler at a new-to-me trail after work. I loved the trail and can't wait to run there again. But the run wasn't so great. It was hot, humid and storms were all around us, but it's always fun to run with these ladies!
